The Ultimate Guide to Thailand for Indian Travelers
Planning your first trip to the Land of Smiles? Here is a highly curated guide addressing everything Indian travelers need to know before visiting Thailand.
Do Indians need a Visa for Thailand?
Historically, Indians relied on the Visa on Arrival (VoA). However, Thailand frequently announces Visa Exemptions for Indian passport holders (allowing up to 30 days of visa-free travel) to boost tourism.
- If Exemption is active: You pay ₹0. Just show your passport, return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation at immigration.
- If VoA is active: It costs 2,000 THB (approx. ₹4,500 INR). Expect long queues at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). You can pay an extra 200 THB for the fast-track lane.
Direct Flights from India to Thailand
Thailand is one of the most accessible international destinations from India.
- To Bangkok (BKK/DMK): Direct flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore via IndiGo, Air India, Thai Airways, and Thai AirAsia. Flight time is roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
- To Phuket (HKT): Direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai are available via IndiGo. This saves you a layover in Bangkok if your main destination is the islands!
Surviving as a Vegetarian (Indian & Pure Veg Food)
Thailand is a seafood and meat-heavy country, but finding vegetarian or authentic Indian food is surprisingly easy, especially in tourist hubs.
- Bangkok: The Sukhumvit area (especially Nana and Asok) is packed with Indian restaurants like Bawarchi, Amritsr, and pure veg South Indian spots.
- Local Thai Veg Food: Learn the phrase "Mang sa wi rat" (vegetarian) or look for yellow and red flags with the word "Jay" (เจ) which means strict vegan (no garlic/onions). Try Pad Thai Jay or Green Curry with Tofu.
Currency Hacks: THB to INR
The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). Currently, 1 THB is approximately ₹2.3 INR.
Best strategy: DO NOT convert INR directly to THB at the airport; the rates are terrible. Instead, carry US Dollars (USD) and convert them at reputable local exchanges like Superrich (orange or green booths) in Bangkok for the absolute best rates. Alternatively, carry a Zero Forex Markup card like Niyo Global.
Where Should You Go in Thailand?
- Bangkok: Best for shopping (MBK, Chatuchak), ornate temples, and rooftop bars.
- Phuket & Krabi: Best for island hopping, stunning limestone cliffs, James Bond island, and beach clubs.
- Pattaya: Best for vibrant nightlife, walking street, and budget travel.
- Chiang Mai: Best for a cooler climate, ethical elephant sanctuaries, night bazaars, and digital nomads.
